HESTON
HAMPERED BY EMMETTS RESERVES.
MURPHY CUP 5th APRIL 2008
The Emmetts management gamble of blooding new and squad players nearly bore
fruit in a high scoring Murphy Cup game in Collindale last sat.. The Emmetts
started the stronger despite losing one of Haughain brothers ( the younger
& better looking one) early on to a controversial incident.
Heston quick forwards made for entertaining football but the Emmetts
retaliated with some old fashioned route one football. Not surprisingly only
two points separated the sides as half time approached with David Evans
and Nigel Boyle commanding the back line allowing Fergus Towmey and Ciaran
Walsh to test and tease the Heston boys.
Conditions brightened in the second half with the wind and hail just a memory
but the high standard of footwork from both teams was maintained. Heston
midfielder Bernie showed his experience with some fine catches and relentless
runs but the 'Dods' edged the Emmetts back into the game with his never say die
attitude. Finally Heston beat Mick with a fine individual goal (even it was a
bit too soccer for the purest) and put the game to bed. However the Emmetts
were not too disappointed in the display with key members rested to allow for
as many squad players as possible to find their feet at intermediate level.
Joint manager Mick Kenny summed it up " We need these games to see how
players react. The Emmetts always had a policy of welcoming new players and
letting them prove themselves. Inter county or Junior 'B' level lads all start
off with a clean sheet with us and you would be surprised how some
lads come on after getting a fair hearing" Enough said
Mick!
ROBERT EMMETTS 2-8 BROTHER PEARSES 1-5
MURPHY CUP 13th APRIL 2008
ANOTHER YEAR ANOTHER VICTORY !
For the second time in the weekend, dual star Gary McCollum proved the
difference between the Emmetts and a determined Pearses outfit. Perivale was
the scene for Gary to show his range of passing abilities with Donal Murphy and
debutant Paul Fitzgearld benefiting to put game beyond doubt late in the second
half. Despite several players repersenting the hurlers the night before, the
Emmetts had finished the first half 0-6 to 0-1 up . The defence led by captain
Kevin McMullen took full advantage of the wind to show some good attacking
football to help the front six get on the scoreboard. Wexfordman
Ben Jackman needed no such help as he pounced on a defensive
mistake to score the point of the day with the outside of his boot ( think
Roberto Carlos free kick )
However the Pearses showed why they were a former senior outfit by dominating
the start of the second half. As point by point they nudged towards the Emmetts
tally, Gary decided to get hold of the game. Aided by Dods and Ciaran Walsh
,the blue and gold put together some fluid movements which ended in a brace of
goals. ( the pick was a Paul Fitzgearld screamer ).
Time was still left for Mick ' the cat ' to save a penalty but alas he didn't
which denied him yet another clean sheet. Six points separated the sides
in the end but there will be little between these teams when they meet in the
league later this year. Manager Hugh Haughian was happy with the performance
" I was delighted with the lads especially the new guys, some people said
we were missing ten of the regulars today but I belive in giving everyone a
fair crack of the whip. Don't ask me how Mick, Ciaran and myself can drop these
lads now."

Emmetts shade a thriller over Harps - Junior Championship Final 2007 Emmetts
and Dulwich Harps fought out a most competitive battle where scores
were level six times before Emmetts grabbed the silverware with four
late points.
With the score perched at 1-11 for Emmetts to 2-8 for
Harps and both sides having thrown everything at each other the balance
shifted towards Emmetts with time running out.
Between the 27th
and 33rd minutes of the second-half the eventual winners shaded it when
Donal Murphy (0-2) Ciaran Walsh (free) and Barry McAleese popped over
the valuable points that made victory secure.
Emmetts went in
leading by 1-9 to 1-3 at half-time. Dulwich hit the first goal of the
game in the 14th minute when John Mernagh roundedoff a four-man move
putting them 1-2 to 0-3 ahead.
But Emmetts full-forward Tom Conlon
levelled matters for the third time at 1-3 each four minutes later when
he goaled at the other end.
The second quarter saw Emmetts take
control. And six points on the trot by Shane Lawlor, Ciaran Walsh,
Donal Murphy, Frank Mitchell, Tom Conlon and a second by Mitchell sent
them in for the break at 1-9 to 1-3. Dulwich, with defeat staring them
in the face, suddenly began to play a lot better after the re-start.
By
the end of the third quarter they were back on level terms for the
fourth time at 1-10 to 2-7 due in rich measure to Joe Mernagh who
grabbed his second goal five minutes after the resumption.
The game was level for the fifth time at 1-11 for Emmetts and 2-8 for Dulwich with 12 minutes remaining.
Anything was possible at this stage as each side matched each other up and down the field.
But
as the tempo started to increase further both sides shot a series of
wides and with three minutes of normal time left it was still anybody’s
game.
Emmetts however held firm and somehow nosed in front and with four late points taking them past the winning line.
Ciaran
Walsh 0-5 (0-2 frees), Donal Murphy 0-3, Frank Mitchell and Hugh
Haughian 0-2 each along with Tom Conlon 1-1, Shane Lawlor and Barry
Mcleese with 0-1 each accounted for Emmetts tally. Joe Mernagh, topped
the game’s scoring charts with 21 for Dulwich but still ended up on the
losing side. Graham Morris hit 0-4, Brian O’Donnell delivered 0-2 while
Ray Little chipped in with 0-1.

FLD3B - 10 AUGUST 2006 : ROBERT EMMETTS 1-11 (14) V. FULHAM IRISH B 3-04 (13)
This
was a great close game which was in the balance from the first throw in
to the very end with the Emmetts having to work hard to combat a habit
of conceding goals by keeping the scoreboard ticking over with points
at the other end. This game made it three wins in a row for the
Emmetts and will hopefully be a trend which can be continued for the
rest of the season.
Emmetts made their by now traditional
sluggish start to see Fulham score straight from the throw in and there
was an initial concern that Fulham were going to have far superior
fitness as a result of training with their first team colleagues.
However, after this early setback the Emmetts got firmly stuck in and
dominated possession for almost all of the rest of the first
half. Notwithstanding this it took a long time for Emmetts
dominance to start to take shape on the scoreboard. The Emmetts
failed to score until the 15th minute of the first half by which point
Fulham had gone ahead by 0-2 to 0-0. The Emmetts found their
scoring range however and came back with four unanswered points from
Donal Murphy (0-2), Shane Lawlor and Kevin Munnelly. The looked
to be solidly controlled until late in the first half when Fulham came
back with a goal and it was only a late point from Ray Sweeney which
levelled the game at 0-5 to 1-2 for half-time.
The second
half was a much more balanced affair as the Emmetts faced up the hill
(Greenford pitch 2) and into the wind. Emmetts scored evenly
throughout the half showing much better composure at taking points but
Fulham stayed in contact all the way through with a strong ability to
take goals when it mattered. High Haughian should have put the
game beyond doubt late on in the half when a storming run from the
middle of the field took him past several defenders only for the keeper
to stop his shot when he was one-on-one. The Emmetts held on
though for a 1 point win.
Best performers for the Emmetts
were Donal Murphy, Hugh Haughian and Colm Murphy whose running was
tireless. In defence James Quinn and Ronan McGinn were very
strong and drove forward at every opportunity whilst up front Tom
Conlon, Ray Sweeney and Gearoid Keane ran tirelessly to make themselves
available.
Scorers: Donal Murphy (0-5), Tom Conlon (1-1),
Hugh Haughian, Shane Lawlor, Kevin Munnelly, Gearoid Keane, Ray Sweeney

JFC RD3 - 30 JULY 2006 : ROBERT EMMETTS 2-11 (17) V. HENDON GAELS MET 0-03 (3)
As
happened earlier in the year, the Emmetts found their form, shape and
rhythm against the Police and hopefully this will see the team push on
again. As a contest the game was over before the first ball was
thrown in as Hendon could only field 12 players. However, with
the outcome agreed and the referee happy, three Emmetts players
volunteered to change jersey's in order to make a game of it.
Thanks again to Damian Sweeney, Niall Coyne and Damian Lawlor as well
as Ray Sweeney and Nigel Boyle in the second half.once again have been
unlucky to come out the wrong side of a close contest. Similar to
the Dulwich game this was a game which was in the balance all the way
and could have gone either way at various stages. Luck is
definitely not on the Emmetts side.
The game was played in
hot conditions in Ruislip with a strong wind blowing and the Emmetts,
with Tom Conlon restored to Centre Forward after a long time out with
injury looked a completely different team with more options and
movement up front. It also took pressure off Hugh Haughian as the
major target man. Going in at half-time with a 1-05 to 0-03 lead
having played into the wind the Emmetts looked in charge although the
test was going to be pushing on to finish the stronger side. This
the Emmetts did very well and with wind advantage in the second half
the majority of play was in the Hendon half. Special mention
should go to Fergus Toomey who got an impressive 1-01 after half-time
for joint top scorer with Hugh Haughian. This was promising as
the challenge was laid down for Emmetts forwards to improve on recent
returns of only 0-04 in each of the previous three games. Other
good performances came from Colum Cavanagh, Declan Sweeney, Mark Kelly,
Gearoid Keane and Nigel Boyle who all performed well.
Finally
it was promising to see the Emmetts field 22 players despite the
absence of two regulars (Paul Gilligan and Peter Tannian) showing
strength in depth and hopefully competition for places. This game
will hopefully see the Emmetts into the latter stages of the JFC so
hopefully this will be the start of a winning run.

The
Emmetts once again have been unlucky to come out the wrong side of a
close contest. Similar to the Dulwich game this was a game which
was in the balance all the way and could have gone either way at
various stages. Luck is definitely not on the Emmetts side.
It
was another very hot Sunday in Greenford which made it hard work for
both teams and the effort put in by the Emmetts could not be faulted at
any stage. The first half was close throughout. The Emmetts
took an early 2 point lead with efforts from Hugh Haughian and Colum
Cavanagh only to be pegged back by Mary's with a point and a
penalty. Mary's showed their pace when they broke forward and
were always threatening to open up the defence. The inevitable
happened and Mick Kenny was forced to put in a last ditch tackle which
led to a penalty which Mary's duly converted to go ahead 1-1 to
0-2. Mary's also scored the next point as they began to gain
confidence. The Emmetts bounced back however with 2 goals without
response. The first from Gearoid Keane was soon followed by a
second from Paul Gilligan. However Mary's finished the half the
stronger picking off 1-1 to go in a point ahead at 2-3 to 2-2.
The
second half was close all the way. Again the Emmetts started
strong kicking two points and retaking the lead. After this
however Mary's came on strong again and forged a three point advantage
(all points) which despite their best efforts and some fine scores the
Emmetts could not pull back. Best performances for the Emmetts
came from Hugh Haughian and Damien Sweeney in midfield who were
tireless all day. In defence Ronan McGinn, Marty McKee and Colum
Cavanagh all stood firm and James Quinn made an impressive second half
debut at corner back.
Scorers: Paul Gilligan (1-2), Gearoid Keane (1-0), Hugh Haughian (0-2), Peter Tannian, Colum Cavanagh (0-1 each)

MCARDLE CUP Q/F - 11 JUNE 2006 : ROBERT EMMETTS 0-04 (4) V. DULWICH HARPS 2-07 (13)
After
last week the Emmetts were expecting to return to winning ways in the
McArdle Cup. However in scorching heat at Greenford they met a
very determined Dulwich team who were determined to upset the
odds. Despite playing down the hill and with the breeze the
Emmetts once again started slow and within 10 minutes were three points
down. The rest of the half was dominated by the Emmetts though
and whilst the teams went in at 0-4 each at the break the Emmetts felt
unfortunate not to have converted any of the four or five clear goal
opportunities which had been created. Big performers for the
Emmetts in the half were Peter Tannian, Colm Murphy, Damien Sweeney and
Hugh Haughian. Paul Gilligan was also a constant thorn up front.
The
second half was always going to be a battle for the Emmetts.
Having not managed to take full advantage of the hill and the wind, it
was always going to be difficult in the sweltering heat. The game
remained tight all the way. However it was Dulwich who were
slowly managing to convert their chances whilst the Emmetts were
struggling to make pressure count on the scoreboard. As a result
the Emmetts came into the final five minutes three points down and
needing a goal if they were going to turn the game around.
However, as the Emmetts poured forward in one final push it was Dulwich
who struck as the space opened up in the Emmetts defence. Dulwich
scored two late goals which put the result beyond doubt and left the
Emmetts with plenty to consider ahead of their next meeting in three
weeks time.
The conditions were sweltering throughout and
every one of the twenty players used by the Emmetts gave everything to
try and turn the game but it was not to be.
Scorers: Hugh Haughian (0-2), Peter Tannian, Colum Cavanagh (0-1 each)

2005 IFC RELEGATION PLAY-OFF - 4 JUNE 2006 : ROBERT EMMETTS 1-10 (13) V. CUCHULLAINS 2-09 (15)
This
2005 IFC relegation play-off to decide who would be relegated was an
exciting game from start to finish. In the end, the Emmett's
close run at upsetting the odds was overshadowed by the serious injury
suffered by Tom Conlon which saw him taken to hospital. All the
team wish him a speedy recovery. The game was not expected to be
so close, especially in light of the heavy defeat Cuchullains had
inflicted on the Emmetts only 6 or 7 weeks earlier in the first round
of the Football League Division 3. With players like Shane
Lawlor, Marty McKee and Donal Murphy all missing for the game it bodes
well for the season ahead.
The Emmetts started slowly in
each half and this is ultimately what cost us the game with the three
point margin established by Cuchullains during the early stages of the
first half providing the cushion they needed to survive heavy
onslaughts at the end of both halves. In the first half, the
sides were evenly matched at 0-3 to 0-2 in favour of Cuchullains until
they won a penalty after 15 minutes which they duely converted leaving
the lead at four points and they quickly went on to extend the lead to
1-5 to 0-2 at one stage. The Emmett's fought back though to
finish strongly with the gap closed to a single goal by half time with
the teams going in at 0-5 to 1-5. In fact the Emmetts could well
have led at half-time with both Peter Tannian and Fergus Toomey unlucky
not to convert goal opportunities. Strongest performers for the
Emmetts during the first half were Toomey and Tannian as well as the
new midfield partnership of Mark Kelly and Damien Sweeney. Tom
Conlon and Hugh Haughian also increasingly came into the game and Paul
Gilligan was a constant thorn in Cuchullains side at
full-forward. The defence was well lead by Colm Murphy and after
the initial scoring from Cuchullains they closed down all avenues to
goal. In particular, Nigel Boyle was showing good industry from
corner-back regularly supporting the ball carriers bringing the ball
out of defence.
The second half began slowly for the Emmetts
with Cuchullains again stretching the lead to five points from two
early frees. However, after this the Emmetts began to pile on the
pressure but ultimately just could not close the gap to draw
level. There were strong performances across the field in the
second half and things were looking very good until Tom Conlon was
forced off with his injury. This led to a reshuffling of the
attack with Colum Cavanagh coming in to replace Tom and causing a lot
of problems for the defence. Hugh Haughian scored the goal which
again brought the sides back to two points of each other but the
whistle went to blow it up in the immediate kick out after that and the
Emmetts had to be happy with knowing that this was a game which could
have been won had things gone well.
Scorers: Hugh Haughian (1-4), Tom Conlon (0-2), Peter Tannian, Paul Gilligan, Fergus Toomey and Damien Sweeney (0-1 each)

FLD3B - 6 MAY 2006 : ROBERT EMMETTS 0-07 (7) V. ST. JOSEPH'S B 0-04 (4)
This
was a hard fought victory for the Emmetts to continue the strong start
in Division 3B of the League. St. Joseph's were runners up in
2005 and are again one of the stronger teams in Division 3. The
game was played in wet conditions in Perivale which led to a large
number of errors from both sides as the ball was hard to control.
Committment from both teams was fierce as each realised that with the
conditions scoring opportunities were at a premium. The first
half was evenly matched on the pitch in terms of possession and
opportunities but the Emmetts converted more chances which allowed us
to go in with a half-time lead of 0-4 to 0-1. In reality though
there was only a score in it and St.Joseph's had created goal chances
in the first half so the Emmetts knew that they faced a huge battle in
the second half to carry through to a win.
As expected
St.Joseph's applied huge pressure in the start of the second half
pinning the Emmetts back relentlessly in their on half and the pressure
seemed to be telling when they drew level at 0-4 each after 15
minutes. This though seemed to be the spur for the Emmetts to
fight back and saw a period where the Emmetts played their best
football of the match stretching the lead back to 3 points and in
reality the game should have been put out of reach with each of Paul
Gilligan, Peter Tannian and Donal Murphy all unlucky not to find the
net on separate ocassions. As the clock ticked down though St.
Joseph's made one final effort to find an equalising score and seemed
to have it when they swept the ball up the field in a fast series of
passes which put the corner-forward through on goal. Mick Kenny
was equal to the challenge though and made an excellent save whilst
both Nigel Boyle and Shane Lawlor had tracked back to be in position to
clear the ball off the line as St. Joseph's sought to tap in the
rebound. This proved to be the last action of the game and a
relieved Emmetts celebrated a hard fought victory.
Scorers: Hugh Haughian (0-2), Tom Conlon (0-2), Peter Tannian, Jerome Mallon, Shane Lawlor (0-1 each)

FLD3B - 30 APRIL 2006 : ROBERT EMMETTS 3-18 (27) V. HENDON GAELS 1-04 (7)
Following
the disappointment of the previous week, the Emmetts were up for
a big performance to show that it was not a true reflection of the
team's abilities.
Emmets started the game in style with a
mighty point from left half forward Peter Tannian. The resulting
kick-out was won by Captain Hugh Haughian who picked out Kevin Munnelly
who made no mistake in grabbing the first goal of the game.
Hendon fought back and their efforts were rewarded with a point but
this was soon cancelled out. Damien Sweeney, who had a tremendous game
in the middle of the park, burst through the defence to send over a
fine point. Then Keaney, who was awesome on the wing, passed to
Kevin who laid off to the oncoming Damien to send over his
second. Hughie was next, he stormed through to fire over his
first of the day. A strong fist down by Keaney landed to Kevin who
rattled the net again. Damien forced his way > through a dogged
defence to find Hughie who fired the ball over the bar. Tom
Conlon was next on the score sheet for the Emmets, it was now all
one-way traffic. Hendon fought harder but Colum Cavanagh, the
full back, was letting no-one past, he won the ball and powered up the
field, passed to Hughie then onto Pete who shot for goal but was denied
by a great save from the Hendon keeper. Pete soon had another chance
when Fergus set him up, this time he was happy to take the point.
Hendon pushed up the field but were thwarted by the tenacious
centre-back Ronan Mc Ginn, who drove the ball up to Paul Gilligan, who
passed to Hughie for his third. Hendon showed no signs of giving
up and knocked a high ball into the Emmets square but Keaney popped up
with a fine catch to make a goal line clearance. The ball was cleared
up the field and Emmets won a free which
> Tom Conlon cooly
slotted over. Keaney was up again to intercept a Hendon pass and
Pete scored again. The Police tried to get a grip on the game and
scored a fine point. The kept the pressure on and a shot on target was
deflected into the net. Then with their best move of the day sent over
another point. Their resurgence was short-lived however and Emmets
regained control going at half-time 2-10 to 1-4.
The Emmets
started the second half well showing no signs of letting up. Fergus
passed to Pete who started the second like the first knocking the ball
over the bar.Colum Murphy won in the ball defence found Pete with a
fine pass who laid the ball off to Hughie who slotted it over. Minutes
later Hughie done it again. Emmets were in complete control. Paul
Gilligan went round his man and beat the keeper to take Emmets third
goal. The police were under severe pressure, Hughie rose high to catch
the kick-out and knocked it over the bar. Pete added to his tally with
another point. Shane Lawlor, who worked tirelessly throughout, made a
fine catch and found Fergus who rammed the ball toward the net only for
it to hit the crossbar
> into the hands of the keeper. The
police fought back with a point but whilst they never gave up this
would be their last score of the game. The points kept coming for the
Emmets from Hughie and Paul Gilligan and nearly another goal when Colum
Murphy’s effort skimmed just left of the upright. Tom Conlon finished
the Emmets total with an outrageous point to leave the final scoreline
3-18 to 1-4.
It was a day for the forwards to shine scoring
all but one point from open play but the defence was well tested as
Hendon never let up. Mike had to
take the place of the injured
Mick Kenny and was a powerful presence between the posts. The corner
backs were also solid, Nigel Boyle never gave
> his man an inch
and Brian worked the ball out of defence well with some fine
passes. This was a great team effort. It is clear that this
team is hungry to win and on this performance there’s no reason why
they can’t keep doing so.
Team: Mike Cunnane, Nigel

FLD3 - 23 APRIL 2006 : ROBERT EMMETTS 1-03 (6) V. CUCHULLAINS 3-13 (22)
This
was a very disappointing result for the Emmetts team and one which did
not reflect the hard work which had been put in prior to the
game. In the end of the day it would be fair to say this was a
game when everything went right for Cuchullains and which ultimately
they wanted to win a lot more than the Emmetts. The Emmetts will
be thankful that with the Division 3 structure being re-organised into
two groups (A & B) this result will not count in the final
reckoning for the league this year.
Conditions did not help
for this game played in rain and wind in Mitcham but both teams had to
contend with the elements. In the end Cuchullains ran out easy
winners but the damage was done in a competitive first half where
Cuchullains took every chance they got, kicking almost no wides, whilst
the Emmetts failed to convert any of their opportunities. With
the half time scores at 0-2 to 1-7 in favour of Cuchullains it was
always going to be an extremely difficult second half for the Emmetts
and things did not really improve whilst Cuchullains relaxed and were
able to pull away further as the game wore on.
Scorers: Hugh Haughian (1-1), Tom Conlon (0-1), Peter Tannian, Jerome Mallon, Shane Lawlor (0-1 each)
Team:

PRE-SEASON FRIENDLIES
In
an effort to get some live match practice in ahead of the competitions
starting the Emmetts undertook some pre-season challenge matches to get
the rust out of the system. The results were encouraging with the
team recording one victory and two narrow losses to higher ranked
teams. It was a positive start to the season and showed the
promise of the summer to come. The results were as follows:
ROBERT EMMETTS 1-08 (11) V. HESTON GAELS 4-04 (16)
ROBERT EMMETTS 0-09 (9) V. ST ANTHONY'S (READING) 0-06 (6)
